Mississippi– (The Neshoba Democrat Online) According to a report on The Neshoba Democrat website, the man who died in an accident on Mississippi 15 on Sunday was Tommy Orr, former Noxubee County high school math teacher and football and baseball coach. The two-car crash happened near County Road 573, north of Burnside Park. Orr was driving northbound when a car that had been traveling in the southbound lane veered into his land and hit his car head-on. The driver of the other vehicle was taken to a hospital and treated for moderate injuries.

Head-on collisions are a type of motor vehicle accident where the front end of one vehicle hits the front end of another. Although head-on crashes cause many fatalities, they are not the most common type of motor vehicle crash. Head-on collisions are a type of lane-departure accident, as are side-swipe accidents and run-off-road wrecks. Lane-departure crashes happen when a driver fails to travel in the center of their lane. Sometimes, the driver veers so far from the center of their lane that they cross the center line of the roadway. When that happens, they might hit another vehicle head-on or sideswipe it, depending on whether vehicles are traveling on the other side of the road and the position of those vehicles relative to the car that left its lane.

Drivers can avoid head-on collisions by avoiding behaviors that could distract them from staying in the center of their lane, such as cell phone use, texting, drinking and driving, and driving while tired. Barriers in the median and wide medians decrease the risk of head-on collisions by keeping most vehicles on the proper side of the road, even if a driver veers out of their lane.
