Fatal Truck Accidents Hit a 30-Year High

by a Tractor-Trailer Truck Accident Lawsuit Attorney in Mississippi (MS)

According to data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), more truck drivers died in crashes in 2018 than at any point in time in the last 30 years. That number demonstrates a one percent rise over 2017 and is the highest number of trucker deaths since 1988. Over the three-year period ending in 2018, deadly truck collisions went up by 5.7 percent. Early estimates from 2019 suggest that the rise in truck crashes is not over. The numbers do not just demonstrate higher trucker deaths, but the number of people killed in crashes with trucks also rose.

The NHTSA reported drops in overall fatalities, and in decline in deaths of drivers, passengers, pedestrians, motorcyclists, and cyclists. Truck crashes were the only area in which the number of fatalities increased.

The decline in fatal crashes involving other types of vehicles is probably at least in part the result of safer passenger vehicles. Advances in safety technology are helping motorists avoid collisions or reduce the severity of those crashes. Systems that work to alert drivers when a crash is imminent can help attract a distracted motorist’s attention is time for them to slow down. In other cases, automatic braking technology will kick in to avoid a wreck even without the driver applying the brakes. Rear-view cameras are giving motorists a better view when they back up, and blind-spot alerts warn motorists of cars and objects out of their line of sight.

Similar systems would undoubtedly help to prevent crashes involving large trucks as well. Unfortunately, the trucking industry is behind in having such features added to their vehicles. The result is not only more trucker fatalities but more crashes that kill people in smaller vehicles as well.
