Teenage Drivers More Likely To Get Into a Car Accident

New teen drivers face higher crash risks due to inexperience, with the first 6-12 months of independent driving being particularly critical.T he statistics paint a sobering picture: according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 2,883 teenagers between ages 13 and 19 lost their lives in traffic-related incidents in 2022 – that’s approximately eight lives lost each day.

Understanding the risks is important for teen drivers to understand. Phone use behind the wheel has become particularly concerning, as teenage drivers are significantly more likely to be involved in distraction-related crashes than other age groups. Additionally, driving at night or with multiple teenage passengers substantially increases the likelihood of accidents, which is why many graduated licensing programs specifically address these situations.

Insurance companies recognize the unique risks associated with teen drivers, typically resulting in higher premiums for families with teenage drivers. However, many insurers offer discounts for teens who maintain good grades or complete additional driver education programs beyond the basic requirements. These financial incentives can help reinforce positive behaviors and responsible driving practices.

Teenage drivers should understand what they need to do following a car crash.First and foremost, stay calm and ensure everyone’s safety. Move to a safe location off the road if possible and check if anyone needs immediate medical attention. Call 911 immediately if there are any injuries, even minor ones.

Call your parents or guardian right away. Even if it’s a minor accident, having an adult present can help manage the situation and provide support during a stressful time.

Exchange information with the other driver, including your insurance policy, driver’s license, and contact information. You will also want to document the scene of the accident. Take pictures of the damage to the vehicles and get witness’ contact information.

Never apologize or admit fault, even if you think you caused the accident. What you say could be used against you later by insurance companies or in legal proceedings.

Call the police to file a report. Some jurisdictions require this for accidents involving minors, and it’s generally advisable even for minor accidents. While waiting for police, remain in a safe location.

Remember to preserve evidence by waiting for police before moving vehicles (unless it’s unsafe to leave them where they are). Don’t discuss the accident on social media or post any photos, as these could affect insurance or legal outcomes.

Finally, follow up with your insurance company as soon as possible. Many insurers have specific procedures for teen drivers, and your parents can help navigate this process.
