MARSHALL COUNTY, MS (July 7, 2025) — A 37-year-old motorcyclist died in a collision on Highway 309 in Marshall County on Sunday evening, according to the Mississippi Highway Patrol.
The crash occurred on Sunday, June 8, 2025, at approximately 6:59 p.m. on Highway 309 near Batesville. Kelvin V. Glass of Byhalia, Mississippi, was traveling north on Highway 309 on a 2006 Harley-Davidson when it collided with a 2004 Honda CR-V driven by 41-year-old Teresa L. Ragsdale, also from Byhalia.
Glass sustained fatal injuries in the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene. The Mississippi Highway Patrol continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision.
The crash highlights the ongoing dangers facing motorcyclists on Mississippi roadways, where riders are significantly more vulnerable to serious injuries and fatalities compared to occupants of passenger vehicles.
Motorcycle Accident Dangers in Mississippi
Motorcycle accidents are among the most deadly types of crashes on Mississippi roads. Without the protection of a vehicle frame, airbags, or seat belts, motorcyclists face a much higher risk of catastrophic injuries or death when accidents occur.
Understanding the most frequent causes of motorcycle accidents can help raise awareness about preventable tragedies:
- Left-Turn Accidents: When vehicles turn left in front of oncoming motorcycles, often due to failure to see the rider.
- Lane-Changing Collisions: Drivers failing to check blind spots before changing lanes or merging.
- Intersection Crashes: High-risk areas where motorcycles and vehicles cross paths.
- Rear-End Collisions: Following too closely or failing to see motorcycles due to their smaller profile.
- Road Hazards: Potholes, debris, or uneven pavement that pose greater risks to two-wheeled vehicles.
- Weather Conditions: Rain, wind, or poor visibility conditions that affect motorcycle stability and visibility.
Highway 309 in Marshall County is a rural two-lane highway that connects several communities in north Mississippi. These types of roadways can be particularly dangerous for motorcyclists due to higher speed limits, limited visibility around curves, and the mixing of local and through traffic.
Mississippi’s Motorcycle Laws and Safety
Mississippi law requires all motorcycle operators to have a valid motorcycle license or endorsement. However, the state does not have a universal helmet law, requiring helmets only for riders under 21 years of age.
Navigating the aftermath of a motorcycle accident requires specialized legal knowledge. Insurance companies often attempt to minimize payouts to motorcycle accident victims, sometimes unfairly blaming riders for crashes.
