Rollover Car Accidents: What You Need to Know
A rollover car accident is considered one of the most serious types of car accidents. These types of accidents often lead to serious injuries and fatalities due to the intense forces involved when the vehicle flips onto its side or roof. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, rollover crashes constitute about one-fifth of all fatal car crashes. Most rollover accidents occur in single-vehicle crashes.
Unfortunately, SUVs are more likely to rollover than a standard passenger car due to the vehicle’s higher center of gravity and narrower wheelbase. When an SUV makes a sharp turn or sudden direction change, especially going at a higher speed, the higher center of gravity creates a stronger lateral force that can tip the vehicle.
Several factors increase rollover risk, such as speeding, the type of road, driver behavior, tire condition, and the load in the vehicle. To reduce the risk of a rollover car accident, you should:
- Avoid sudden sharp turns and extreme steering maneuvers
- Reduce the speed in poor weather conditions
- Maintain proper tire pressure and condition
- Don’t overload the vehicle
