Eighteen-Wheeler Overturns Causing Major Traffic Delays in Florence, Mississippi
Florence, Mississippi — May 19, 2018 (Times Daily) According to a report by the Times Daily, an overturned tractor-trailer blocked the eastern end of Veterans Drive for over seven hours. Fortunately, no one was injured in the wreck.
The truck rolled over as the driver tried to turn from Cox Creek Parkway onto Veterans Drive. It came to rest on its side. Fortunately, none of the truck’s load of scrap metal spilled, or there would have been additional delays because the cleanup would have taken longer. The wrecked truck did not catch fire either, which is always a risk in a tractor-trailer rollover crash.
Tractor trailer rollovers are relatively frequent, because of the trucks’ high center of gravity. They can be caused by things like excessive speed while turning, overcorrection by a drowsy driver who realizes they are nodding off, or even an abrupt lane change or stop. Sometimes, a shifting load inside of the trailer can produce enough force to roll over the semi-truck, whether it is a tank trailer full of liquid or a box trailer containing cargo that can move or shift during transport. Occasionally, a maintenance issue like underinflated tires, poorly maintained brakes, or a tire blowout can also cause a rollover wreck.
However they happen, 18-wheeler wrecks often take hours to clean up. The cleanup time can be even longer if there are hazardous materials involved, or if the wreckage catches fire and must be extinguished before the damaged vehicle or vehicles can be taken away from the accident scene. In either scenario, rescue workers and others in the area may need to remain a safe distance away from the crash site until it is safe for them to clear away the debris and make the road available for travel again.
