Despite their aggressive look, the truck tire spikes are not meant to be weapons or instruments of intimidation; they are meant to protect the truck’s wheels. What Are Wheel Spikes on Semi Trucks?
Wheel spikes, also known as lug nut covers, are decorative or functional accessories attached to the side of the front tires of a truck’s wheels. These spikes come in various materials, such as metal or plastic, and can vary in length and sharpness. They are largely aesthetic, giving trucks a more aggressive and customized appearance, but they can also serve practical purposes, such as protecting the lug nuts from bits of dirt and debris, which can be particularly useful in maintaining the longevity of wheel components.
As semi-trucks often carry heavy loads bigger than an average vehicle, the wheel nuts help with stability and other necessary functions to mitigate safety risks. They also encourage drivers to give semi-trucks more room, as being taller and lacking rearview mirrors have larger blind spots. However, that does not mean a driver is at fault if they do not notice the spikes and are side-swept by a semi or commercial truck.
Are Wheel Spikes Dangerous?
As the primary use of spikes on semi-truck wheels is to protect the wheel bolts from damage or corrosion, provide a shield from ice, and encourage drivers to give more room to larger trucks, they are not meant to be dangerous. In fact, nut lugs are made from thin sheet metal, weak aluminum alloys, or plastic when they come into contact with another vehicle.
However, when improperly used or installed, they can be dangerous under certain circumstances. On the road, these protrusions can pose risks to other drivers and pedestrians. For instance, in a close-quarters driving scenario, such as traffic congestion or narrow lanes, the spikes can inadvertently come into contact with other vehicles, causing scratches, dents, or more severe damage. Additionally, in an accident or a sudden stop, the spikes can act as hazardous projectiles, increasing the risk of injury.
Wheel and Tire Requirements for Semi-Trucks
There are no specific laws regarding the usage of truck spikes in Mississippi. However, there are several federal laws regulating their usage. As it is truck drivers and not trucking companies who choose to use spikes, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) outlines specific regulations regarding the wheels and tires of semi-trucks to ensure the protection of motorists’ safety on the roads. In addition, truckers are expected to ensure their vehicles are up to standard.
According to FMCSA regulations, all 18-wheeler wheels and rims must be free of cracks, unseated locking rings, bent or broken rims, and any signs of damage or repair that could compromise their integrity. Tires must have a minimum tread depth, be free of significant cuts, and not show signs of tread separation or improper inflation. Violating any of the legal requirements can result in serious penalties.

If a truck driver violates the spikes law by installing nut bolts that can harm or damage property, they can face various penalties such as fines, citations, and orders to remove the spikes.
