Single-Car Accidents in Mississippi: Legal Steps

Mississippi consistently ranks among states with high rates of single-vehicle crashes, particularly in rural areas where factors like narrow roads, wildlife crossings, and limited lighting contribute to accident risks. If you’re involved in a single-car accident in Mississippi, understanding the legal process is crucial.

After ensuring your safety and reporting the accident, Mississippi law requires you to file an accident report within 10 days if property damage exceeds $500. Mississippi follows a pure comparative negligence rule, meaning your compensation may be reduced by your percentage of fault. The state’s statute of limitations gives you three years to file personal injury claims.

Insurance claims should be filed promptly, with thorough documentation of injuries and damages. Consider consulting with a personal injury attorney who specializes in Mississippi traffic law, especially if your accident involved roadway defects or vehicle malfunctions that might indicate third-party liability.
